How the VAT calculator works

Two ways to use it — pick the one that matches your situation.

1

Choose add or remove

Add VAT starts from a net price and adds the VAT on top. Remove VAT starts from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price and backs out the net.

2

Enter the amount and rate

Type the amount and the VAT rate (you can tap a common rate chip). The calculator updates the net, VAT and gross figures as you type.

3

Copy the numbers

Use the net for your invoice line total, the VAT for your tax line, and the gross for what the client pays. No signup required.

VAT Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you add VAT to a price?+

Multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate / 100). For a £100 net price at 20% VAT: 100 × 1.20 = £120 gross. The VAT amount is £20. This calculator does it automatically and shows all three figures (net, VAT, gross).

How do you remove VAT from a gross price?+

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate / 100). For a £120 gross price at 20% VAT: 120 / 1.20 = £100 net. The VAT amount is £20. Switch the toggle to "Remove VAT" and this calculator does the reverse calculation for you.

What VAT rate should I use?+

Use the standard VAT rate for the country of supply: UK 20%, Ireland 23%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Spain 21%, Netherlands 21%, Italy 22%, Belgium 21%, Portugal 23%. Reduced and zero rates apply to specific goods (e.g. food, books, children's clothes) — consult your local tax authority for edge cases.

Is this calculator accurate for HMRC / tax returns?+

The math is accurate, but VAT returns involve more than a single calculation — e.g. reverse charge for EU B2B, zero rates, partial exemption. Use this calculator for quick figures and a tax adviser for your return.

Why is the VAT number slightly off by a penny?+

Rounding. When you back out VAT from a rounded gross price, the reverse calculation can land 1 cent off. Tax authorities accept invoices rounded to two decimals; the tiny difference is expected.

Does the VAT calculator support multi-rate invoices?+

This calculator handles one line at a time. To build a full invoice with multiple line items and mixed VAT rates, use KipBill's free invoice generator — each line can carry its own rate and the totals are calculated for you.
