Is this invoice generator legal to use in Brazil?+
Brazil requires electronic invoicing (NF-e for goods, NFS-e for services) authorized by SEFAZ before the goods or services are delivered. KipBill's PDF is suitable as the DANFE (visual representation of the NF-e); the official XML must be issued through SEFAZ-integrated software with your digital certificate.
What ICMS rate should I use on my invoices?+
ICMS rates in Brazil vary by state and product, typically 17-18% for most goods. Services are subject to ISS (2-5% depending on municipality). Federal taxes include PIS (1.65%) and COFINS (7.6%) on most operations under non-cumulative regime. KipBill lets you set the applicable rate per line.
Do I need to register for ICMS before issuing invoices in Brazil?+
Yes. Before issuing NF-e you must register with the state tax authority (Secretaria da Fazenda) and obtain a digital certificate (A1 or A3). Simples Nacional participants have simplified unified tax collection but still must issue electronic invoices.
What information must every invoice include in Brazil?+
NF-e requires: CNPJ and state registration of issuer; CNPJ/CPF and address of recipient; access key (44 digits); series and number; date of issue and operation; NCM/CFOP codes; product description, quantity, unit price; ICMS, IPI, PIS, COFINS breakdown; and SEFAZ authorization protocol.
Can I issue invoices in a currency other than BRL?+
Yes. Brazilian invoices for international operations can be issued in foreign currency with the exchange rate to BRL. Domestic NF-e must be in BRL. For exports, a specific invoice type (NF-e de exportação) is used. KipBill supports BRL plus 30+ currencies.
How long do I have to keep invoice records in Brazil?+
Brazilian law requires NF-e and accounting records to be retained for at least 5 years (Código Tributário Nacional, Art. 173-174). The XML must be stored in its original digital form and retrievable for tax audits.
