Is this invoice generator legal to use in Germany?+
Yes. The German VAT Act (UStG §14) sets strict requirements for invoices, especially for B2B. KipBill's generator produces PDFs meeting UStG requirements when you include Steuernummer/USt-IdNr., sequential invoice number, delivery date, and VAT breakdown.
What MwSt rate should I use on my invoices?+
Germany's standard MwSt rate is 19%. A reduced rate of 7% applies to basic food, books, newspapers, public transport, and cultural events. Some supplies are exempt (medical, education, financial services). Override the rate per item as needed.
Do I need to register for MwSt before issuing invoices in Germany?+
You must register for VAT (Umsatzsteuer) if your turnover exceeds €22,000 in the previous calendar year and is expected to exceed €50,000 in the current year. Small businesses (Kleinunternehmer) can opt to not charge VAT and must state this on invoices ("Gemäß § 19 UStG wird keine Umsatzsteuer berechnet").
What information must every invoice include in Germany?+
UStG §14 requires: full name and address of supplier and customer, Steuernummer or USt-IdNr., invoice date, sequential invoice number, quantity and description of goods/services, delivery date, net amount per rate, VAT rate, VAT amount, and gross total.
Can I issue invoices in a currency other than EUR?+
Yes. German invoices can be issued in any currency, but the VAT amount must also be shown in EUR. Cross-border B2B invoices within the EU use reverse-charge and are issued without VAT. KipBill handles multi-currency formatting.
How long do I have to keep invoice records in Germany?+
German law requires you to retain invoices and accounting records for 10 years (§14b UStG). Records must be stored in a form that is unalterable, readable, and accessible throughout the retention period.
