Is this invoice generator legal to use in China?+
In China, official tax receipts (发票 fapiao) are issued through the state-run Golden Tax System, not freely by businesses. KipBill's PDF invoice functions as a commercial document (proforma or internal record), but it does not replace the fapiao. Buyers need a fapiao from an authorized tax-control machine to claim input VAT credit.
What VAT rate should I use on my invoices?+
China's standard VAT rate is 13% (manufacturing, trade), 9% (transport, construction, agriculture, basic utilities), or 6% (services, R&D, financial, modern services). Small-scale taxpayers pay a simplified 3% rate. Override the rate per item where applicable.
Do I need to register for VAT before issuing invoices in China?+
To issue fapiao you must register with the local tax bureau and obtain authorization for tax-control equipment. General VAT taxpayers (annual revenue above ¥5 million) can issue Special VAT Fapiao; small-scale taxpayers issue General VAT Fapiao and can request the tax bureau to issue Special Fapiao on their behalf.
What information must every invoice include in China?+
A valid fapiao must contain: fapiao code and number (pre-printed by tax authority); issuer's business name and tax number; buyer's business name and tax number (for Special VAT Fapiao); description; quantity; unit price; amount; VAT rate and amount; issuer signature/stamp; and tax authority verification.
Can I issue invoices in a currency other than CNY?+
Domestic Chinese transactions require CNY-denominated fapiao. For cross-border trade, foreign currency invoices are allowed and a CNY exchange rate applies. KipBill supports CNY and 30+ currencies for commercial invoicing.
How long do I have to keep invoice records in China?+
Chinese law (PRC Tax Collection and Administration Law) requires fapiao and accounting records to be retained for a minimum of 10 years. Electronic fapiao (e-fapiao) has the same legal status as paper fapiao and must be archived accordingly.
