FAQ — Invoicing in Colombia

Is this invoice generator legal to use in Colombia?+

In Colombia, most VAT-liable taxpayers must issue electronic invoices (facturación electrónica) through DIAN (Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales). A KipBill PDF serves as a commercial document; the official XML DIAN-validated invoice must be issued through an authorised software.

What IVA rate should I use on my invoices?+

Colombia's standard IVA rate is 19%. Reduced 5% (basic food, first-necessity goods). Zero-rated: exports and certain basic goods. Exempt: education, health, residential rent. Additional consumption tax (INC) on some specific goods.

Do I need to register for IVA before issuing invoices in Colombia?+

IVA (VAT) registration is generally mandatory from commencement of commercial activity. Electronic invoicing is required for most taxpayers (all except very small). Register with DIAN through RUT (Registro Único Tributario).

What information must every invoice include in Colombia?+

DIAN electronic invoice requires: CUFE unique identifier, supplier NIT/name/fiscal responsibility, customer NIT/name, date, description, unit of measure, quantity, unit price, IVA rate and amount, total, DIAN validation.

Can I issue invoices in a currency other than COP?+

Electronic Colombian invoices are typically in COP. For export invoices, foreign currency is allowed with COP reference at the TRM (Tasa Representativa del Mercado) on invoice date.

How long do I have to keep invoice records in Colombia?+

Colombian law requires retention of invoices and accounting records for at least 5 years. DIAN-validated XML is stored automatically in the DIAN system.
