FAQ — Invoicing in France

Is this invoice generator legal to use in France?+

Yes. The French Commercial Code (Article L441-9) and CGI Article 242 nonies A set mandatory invoice content. KipBill's generator produces PDFs meeting these requirements when you include SIREN/SIRET, TVA number (if applicable), sequential invoice number, and TVA breakdown.

What TVA rate should I use on my invoices?+

France's standard TVA rate is 20%. Reduced rates: 10% (restaurants, transport, renovations), 5.5% (food, books, energy), 2.1% (medicines, press). Some supplies are exempt (medical, education, exports). Override the rate per item where needed.

Do I need to register for TVA before issuing invoices in France?+

You register for TVA automatically when you register your business with the CFE/URSSAF. Micro-entrepreneurs under the TVA threshold (€36,800 services / €91,900 goods in 2025) are exempt (franchise en base) and must state this: "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI".

What information must every invoice include in France?+

French law requires: business name and address, SIREN/SIRET, TVA number, customer details, issue date, invoice number, delivery date, description, quantity, unit price HT, discounts, TVA rate and amount, total HT, total TTC, payment terms, and late-payment penalty clause.

Can I issue invoices in a currency other than EUR?+

Yes. Invoices can be issued in any currency, but the TVA amount must also appear in EUR. Intra-EU B2B supplies use reverse-charge with the customer's VAT number on the invoice. KipBill handles multi-currency formatting.

How long do I have to keep invoice records in France?+

French tax law requires invoices to be retained for 10 years from the close of the accounting period (Livre des Procédures Fiscales, Article L102 B). Electronic archiving must guarantee integrity and readability.
