Is this invoice generator legal to use in Italy?+
Yes. Italian DPR 633/1972 and DL 127/2015 govern invoicing, including mandatory electronic invoicing (Fattura Elettronica) via SDI for most B2B and B2C transactions since 2019. KipBill's PDF is suitable as a visual copy — electronic XML submission is handled through the SDI system.
What IVA rate should I use on my invoices?+
Italy's standard IVA rate is 22%. Reduced rates: 10% (food, hospitality, renovations), 5% (some social services), 4% (essential food, books, medical devices). Some supplies are exempt. Override the rate per item as needed.
Do I need to register for IVA before issuing invoices in Italy?+
You register for Partita IVA with the Agenzia delle Entrate before issuing your first invoice. Freelancers and companies charge IVA from day one. The flat-rate regime (regime forfettario) allows simplified taxation up to €85,000/year and exempts from IVA on invoices.
What information must every invoice include in Italy?+
DPR 633/1972 Art. 21 requires: issue date, sequential invoice number, supplier and customer details (including Partita IVA/Codice Fiscale), description, quantity, unit price, taxable base per IVA rate, IVA rate and amount, total, and ritenuta if applicable.
Can I issue invoices in a currency other than EUR?+
Yes. Italian invoices can be in any currency. The IVA amount must also be shown in EUR when issuing to Italian customers. For electronic invoicing via SDI, amounts in the XML must be in EUR. KipBill supports 30+ currencies.
How long do I have to keep invoice records in Italy?+
Italian law requires invoices and related records to be retained for 10 years (Codice Civile Art. 2220 and DPR 600/1973). Electronic invoices must be archived in conformity with specific technical requirements set by the Agenzia delle Entrate.
