FAQ — Invoicing in Malaysia

Is this invoice generator legal to use in Malaysia?+

Malaysia has replaced GST with SST (Sales and Service Tax) since 2018. Malaysia is rolling out mandatory e-invoicing via LHDN's MyInvois platform (phased 2024-2026 by revenue band). KipBill can serve as the commercial/proforma invoice; official e-invoicing goes through MyInvois.

What SST rate should I use on my invoices?+

Malaysia's Service Tax is 6% on taxable services (hospitality, telecommunications, professional services, etc.). Sales Tax is 5% or 10% on taxable manufactured/imported goods. Some services and goods are exempt or zero-rated.

Do I need to register for SST before issuing invoices in Malaysia?+

Service Tax registration is mandatory for taxable service providers exceeding RM 500,000 annual turnover (RM 1.5 million for some activities). Sales Tax registration applies to manufacturers exceeding RM 500,000.

What information must every invoice include in Malaysia?+

LHDN requires: supplier name/registration number/SST ID, customer name/address, invoice number, date, description, quantity, unit price, SST rate and amount, total. E-invoice includes UUID from MyInvois.

Can I issue invoices in a currency other than MYR?+

Yes. Malaysian businesses can invoice in any currency. SST amounts must be in MYR (or converted at Bank Negara Malaysia rates). E-invoices via MyInvois accept foreign currency with MYR equivalent.

How long do I have to keep invoice records in Malaysia?+

Malaysian law requires retention of invoices and accounting records for at least 7 years. E-invoicing records are stored in MyInvois.
