Australian Dollar invoice FAQ

Can I legally issue an invoice in Australian Dollar?+

Yes. Australian businesses invoice in AUD for domestic transactions. The ATO accepts invoices in any currency, but GST-registered businesses must show the GST amount in AUD.

What tax rate should I put on a Australian Dollar invoice?+

Standard GST is 10% on most supplies. Some supplies are GST-free (basic food, most healthcare, most education) or input-taxed (financial services, residential rent). Registration threshold A$75,000/year for most businesses, A$150,000 for non-profits.

Where does the $ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+

The $ sign goes BEFORE the amount: $1,000.00. Use "A$" or "AUD" for clarity with other dollar currencies. The "Tax Invoice" heading is mandatory for GST-registered businesses when the invoice exceeds A$82.50 inclusive of GST.

Do I have to show the Australian Dollar equivalent of the tax?+

If you invoice in non-AUD and you're GST-registered, the GST amount must be shown in AUD at the RBA reference rate at the invoice date.

Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+

Yes. KipBill supports AUD and 30+ currencies. Switch currency on a duplicate invoice for NZ or US clients.
