British Pound invoice FAQ

Can I legally issue an invoice in British Pound?+

Yes. Post-Brexit, UK businesses continue to invoice in GBP freely. HMRC requires specific content on VAT invoices but permits any currency; if VAT-registered, the VAT amount must also be shown in GBP.

What tax rate should I put on a British Pound invoice?+

Standard UK VAT is 20%. Reduced rate 5% (domestic energy, children's car seats, some renovations), zero rate (most food, books, children's clothes, public transport), exempt (education, medical services, insurance). Override per line as needed.

Where does the £ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+

The £ sign goes BEFORE the amount: £1,000.00. Comma as thousands separator, dot as decimal. Some formal documents use £1,000 for whole pounds and only show pence (.00) when present.

Do I have to show the British Pound equivalent of the tax?+

If you're VAT-registered and invoice in non-GBP currency, HMRC requires the VAT amount to be shown in GBP using an HMRC-published or ECB reference rate. Most businesses use the rate at the invoice date and keep documentation.

Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+

Yes. KipBill supports GBP plus 30+ other currencies. Duplicate to switch currency and keep the original invoice reference in the description for audit.
