US Dollar invoice FAQ
Can I legally issue an invoice in US Dollar?+
Yes. There is no general legal restriction on invoicing in USD in most jurisdictions, including the EU, UK, and most of Asia. If you're VAT-registered and the customer is in your country, local rules usually require the VAT amount also to appear in your local currency — but the invoice itself can be USD-denominated.
What tax rate should I put on a US Dollar invoice?+
US sales tax is set at state and local level (0% in Oregon/Delaware/Montana/New Hampshire, up to 10%+ in some jurisdictions). If you're issuing a USD invoice from outside the US, use your own country's VAT/GST rate. If the client is in the US and you have no nexus, typically 0%.
Where does the $ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+
The $ sign goes BEFORE the amount in US convention: $1,000.00. Most accounting software and templates follow this. Use "US$" or "USD" if there's ambiguity with other dollar currencies (CAD, AUD, SGD).
Do I have to show the US Dollar equivalent of the tax?+
Only if you're VAT-registered in a country that requires it (e.g. EU, UK, Australia). The tax amount must typically also be shown in the local currency using the reference exchange rate at the invoice date. The main amounts can stay in USD.
Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+
Yes — KipBill lets you duplicate an invoice and change the currency. For multi-currency clients, create the invoice in each currency separately and reference the original invoice number in the description.
