Japanese Yen invoice FAQ
Can I legally issue an invoice in Japanese Yen?+
Yes. Japanese businesses invoice in JPY domestically. Under the Qualified Invoice System (since October 2023), B2B invoices must show the issuer's registration number (T-number) for the buyer to claim input consumption tax.
What tax rate should I put on a Japanese Yen invoice?+
Standard Consumption Tax (消費税) is 10%. Reduced rate 8% for most food and beverages (excluding alcohol and dining out) and subscription newspapers published at least twice weekly.
Where does the ¥ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+
The ¥ or 円 sign goes BEFORE the amount in convention, though ¥ is common in international contexts and 円 is used natively: ¥10,000 or 10,000円. JPY has no decimals in practice — amounts are whole integers.
Do I have to show the Japanese Yen equivalent of the tax?+
If you invoice in non-JPY as a Japanese business, the Consumption Tax amount should be expressed in JPY. For cross-border transactions, JPY amounts often sit alongside the foreign-currency main amount.
Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+
Yes. KipBill supports JPY and 30+ currencies. For cross-border Japanese business, many issue duplicate invoices in USD or EUR with JPY as reference.
