Canadian Dollar invoice FAQ

Can I legally issue an invoice in Canadian Dollar?+

Yes. Canadian businesses invoice in CAD domestically. The CRA accepts invoices in any currency, but GST/HST-registered businesses must report the tax amount in CAD.

What tax rate should I put on a Canadian Dollar invoice?+

Federal GST 5%, combined with provincial sales tax as HST in Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia/New Brunswick/PEI/Newfoundland (15%). Quebec has QST (9.975%). BC/Saskatchewan/Manitoba have separate PST (6-7%). Alberta and territories: 5% GST only.

Where does the $ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+

The $ sign goes BEFORE the amount in Canadian convention: $1,000.00. Use "C$" or "CAD" when there's potential ambiguity with USD, AUD, or other dollar currencies.

Do I have to show the Canadian Dollar equivalent of the tax?+

If you're GST/HST-registered and invoice in non-CAD currency, CRA requires the tax amount to be expressed in CAD at the Bank of Canada reference rate on the invoice date or payment date.

Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+

Yes — KipBill supports CAD and 30+ currencies. Many Canadian businesses invoice US clients in USD and domestic clients in CAD from the same account.
