Indian Rupee invoice FAQ

Can I legally issue an invoice in Indian Rupee?+

Yes. GST-registered Indian businesses issue invoices in INR for domestic transactions. Export invoices can be in foreign currency and use zero-rated treatment. E-invoicing via IRP (Invoice Registration Portal) is mandatory for B2B if aggregate turnover exceeds ₹5 crore.

What tax rate should I put on a Indian Rupee invoice?+

India's GST has four main rates: 5% (essentials, transport), 12% (processed food), 18% (most services and goods — default), 28% (luxury items, automobiles). The rate for an item is determined by its HSN/SAC code. Override per line as needed.

Where does the ₹ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+

The ₹ sign goes BEFORE the amount: ₹1,000. Large numbers use the Indian numbering system with lakhs and crores: ₹1,00,000 = 1 lakh = 100,000. In invoices you'll see both conventions depending on the audience.

Do I have to show the Indian Rupee equivalent of the tax?+

For domestic GST invoices, the tax amount must be in INR. Export invoices in foreign currency don't usually require an INR tax line since exports are zero-rated.

Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+

Yes. KipBill supports INR and 30+ currencies. Indian exporters often maintain dual-language, dual-currency invoicing for international clients.
