Brazilian Real invoice FAQ

Can I legally issue an invoice in Brazilian Real?+

For domestic Brazilian sales, an NF-e (for goods) or NFS-e (for services) is the legally valid document — issued via SEFAZ integration. A KipBill PDF works as a DANFE-style visual reference; the XML remains the legal record.

What tax rate should I put on a Brazilian Real invoice?+

ICMS 17-18% typical (varies by state). ISS 2-5% on services (by municipality). Federal PIS 1.65% and COFINS 7.6% under the non-cumulative regime. IPI on some manufactured goods.

Where does the R$ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+

The R$ sign goes BEFORE the amount: R$1.000,00. Brazilian numeric convention uses dot as thousands separator and comma as decimal.

Do I have to show the Brazilian Real equivalent of the tax?+

For NF-e issuance, all tax amounts are in BRL. Export NF-e uses foreign currency but includes BRL equivalents at the Central Bank reference rate.

Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+

Yes. KipBill supports BRL and 30+ currencies. For cross-border Brazilian business, the NF-e is the legal document — KipBill is the presentation layer.
