Mexican Peso invoice FAQ

Can I legally issue an invoice in Mexican Peso?+

For tax-valid Mexican transactions, the invoice must be a CFDI 4.0 stamped by a SAT-authorised PAC. A KipBill PDF works as a commercial reference; the official CFDI XML must be generated by a CFDI system.

What tax rate should I put on a Mexican Peso invoice?+

Standard IVA 16%. Reduced 8% in the northern and southern border regions. Zero-rated: basic food, medicines, exports. Exempt: education, medical, land.

Where does the $ sign go on the invoice — before or after the amount?+

The $ sign goes BEFORE the amount: $1,000.00. Use "MXN" or "MX$" to distinguish from USD, especially for cross-border invoicing. MXN uses dot as thousands separator and comma as decimal in Mexican convention: $1.000,00.

Do I have to show the Mexican Peso equivalent of the tax?+

For CFDI 4.0, if the invoice is in a non-MXN currency, the exchange rate to MXN on the invoice date must be included. The IVA amount is calculated in both currencies.

Can I convert this invoice to another currency later?+

Yes. KipBill supports MXN and 30+ currencies. For cross-border Mexican business, generate the PDF in MXN and issue a CFDI XML alongside.
