What is a proforma invoice?
A proforma invoice is a preliminary bill sent before a sale is final. It shows the buyer exactly what they will pay — items, quantities, prices, taxes and terms — so they can approve the purchase, pay in advance, arrange financing or clear the goods through customs.
It is not a tax invoice: it doesn't record a sale and doesn't use your invoice numbering. Once the deal is confirmed and delivered, you issue the real invoice.

What's the difference between a proforma and an invoice?+
A proforma is an offer made before the sale; an invoice records a sale that took place and is what counts for tax. That's why a proforma doesn't use your invoice numbering.
Is a proforma the same as a quote?+
They're close: both come before the sale. A proforma looks like an invoice and is used when the buyer needs the exact amount to pay in advance, get financing or import the goods.
Should a proforma include VAT?+
Show the tax the final invoice will include so the buyer sees the full amount. The tax is reported on the real invoice, not on the proforma.
